Treat your bunion in Edmonton with our Specialists

Bunions are bony bumps that form on the joint at the base of your big toe and can be painful, especially in tighter shoes. Their causes can come from genetics or birth deformities, physical stress or foot injuries in your feet and joints, over pronation, or a medical condition, such as arthritis. When your big toe is pushing against your next toe or the shape of your foot is putting too much pressure on the joint, this forces it to enlarge and stick out.

Some of the symptoms of bunions include:

  • A swelling, redness, or soreness at the base of the toe
  • A bump or bulge at the base of the big toe
  • Corns or calluses where your toes overlap
  • Pain - can be recurring or persistent
  • Restricted big toe movement if you have arthritis

If you feel any of these symptoms, it might be time to visit your doctor or podiatrist and get your foot examined. They’ll be able to rule out other issues or foot problems and let you know what can be done to treat your bunions.

Treating a Bunion in Edmonton

At the present time, there’s no best treatment for bunions but you can treat them at home with non-prescribed medication to alleviate the pain. Avoid shoes that will hurt your feet, such as tight ones or high heels. You can also invest in orthotics or cushion pads depending on the severity of your condition.

You should avoid activities that put direct pressure on your feet and big toes and instead try to take part in activities that don’t, such as cycling or swimming. Bunions should not keep you from maintaining an active lifestyle as you may experience other issues if you become sedentary.

While they don’t always cause issues, bunions can cause complications, such as hammertoe, bursitis, or metatarsalgia. Talk to your doctor or podiatrist if you think you might have one of these issues.

Bunion Prevention

When the cause is genetics or a defect at birth, you can’t really prevent bunions but if not, there are a few ways that you can, such as careful shoe choices. Ensure that your shoes fit your feet properly without pressing or squeezing on any part of your foot and have some room in the toe box for freedom of movement for your toes and joints.

If you suspect you may have a bunion, call the Edmonton Foot Health Centre to book an appointment today.
