Athlete's Foot Treatments

Athlete’s foot, or tinea pedis as it is known medically, is a common skin infection caused by fungus. Affecting about 15% of the global population, infection is more commonly found in men than women and older children or young adults. It is believed to have spiked historically with the rise of health clubs, war, and travel. It occurs anywhere on the foot but most commonly between your toes or the bottom of your feet. In rare cases, you may see it on your nails or hands.

Signs and Symptoms

If your condition continues without treatment, you may run into complications, such as bacterial skin infections or inflammation of the lymphatic vessels. If you scratch the infected area, you could cause further damage to the skin and the infection could also spread to your fingernails and hands or you could spread it to your environment and other people.

The only true way to know is to visit your doctor or podiatrist so book an appointment today to be sure!

The cause of Athlete’s foot can be one of a number of different funguses, which survive in and around places such as bathrooms, swimming pools and locker rooms. You can get it from coming in contact with infected skin or picking it up from the environment it’s living in, such as walking barefoot in public areas such as showers, pool decks, etc.

Preventing Athlete’s Foot in Edmonton

In order to prevent Athlete’s foot, you should try to keep your feet clean and dry. Avoid walking barefoot in areas where the fungus can flourish, such as public showers and around swimming pools. Keep your toenails cut short, wear big enough shoes and change your socks every day in order to keep fungus from setting in and growing.

Athlete’s Foot Treatment
